The Sickle Cell Disease Rapid Test Cassette (Whole Blood) is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of Hemoglobin S (HbS) in whole blood to aid in the diagnosis of Sickle Cell Disease.
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder caused by a point mutation in the β-globin gene (HBB), in which glutamic acid at position 6 of the β chain is replaced by valine, resulting in the production of structurally abnormal hemoglobin S (HbS). Under deoxygenated conditions, HbS molecules polymerize into rigid fibers, causing red blood cells to adopt a characteristic sickle shape. These sickled cells are less deformable, have a shortened lifespan (approximately 16 days compared to 120 days for normal red blood cells), and can obstruct small blood vessels, leading to tissue damage, pain crises, and multiple complications.
The Sickle Cell Disease Rapid Test Cassette (Whole Blood) utilizes a double antibody combination of an anti-HbS antibody coated particle and anti-HbS antibody immobilized on membrane to detect HbS qualitatively and selectively in whole blood.
